Throwback Gems: Doom

Hey guys, it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to post anything. I’ve been out of town, and just now really getting back. I’ve missed the blog, and what better way to come back then with a Throwback Gems post? Hope you enjoy.

Doom_cover_artOriginally released in 1993, on PC, by id Software, DOOM has spawned across multiple platforms since then. In the video game industry, is known as a classic, and for good reason. I personally never played Doom, until 1995 on the SNES.

Who hasn’t heard of Doom? If not then it really would surprise me. Which it should, Doom is considered one of the most important and influential games in the industry. Looking back now, Doom may not seem like much. Back then, Doom was great, scary and terrifying to some, including me.

In the early 90’s gaming was just starting to break barriers. You the player, playing as a space marine, fighting demons who were invading from hell, was unheard from. It was different, something new and refreshing.

With a good variety of weapons, and levels, Doom had a good amount of fun. Which gave many players a game they could continue to play time and time again. Sadly though a game such as this, came with a lot of controversy’s.

Through out the years, Doom has received hate for having things such as, Violence, Gore, Satanic Imagery. Doom gave fears that it would be a realistic killing simulator, it was dubbed a mass murder simulator by religious groups. If that’s not enough, Doom had even been blamed for school shootings at one point.

Even with all of this, it hasn’t stopped Doom from remaining popular amongst players, or even being ported to new consoles. The series has steadily evolved over the years, and shows no signs of stopping. The series may not see as many releases as some others do, but that is OK, us fans are patiently waiting.

If you’ve never played Doom or any of the series, I suggest that you do. Doom may be old, yet you can still find it easy on PC, Xbox 360, even PS3.

Thanks for reading everyone, I’ll be doing another Toxic Transgression update soon, so stick around.

  2. I played this game in the late 90s, and I never thought of it as a horror game. I guess it was, but I always just thought of it as a shooting game. My friends and I played against each other a lot. It was on the computers at our school, although I don’t know how that happened. Most teachers didn’t mind, but when people found out that the Columbine shooters designed a level of Doom to replicate their school, people starting to think differently.

If Doom wasn’t around, those kids would have still got their hands on guns and carried out their plan, but some people just have to blame video games for whatever reason.
