Making the leap to next gen

When the Xbox 360, Ps3, and Nintendo Wii I like anyone else had to make a decision. Which to choose? A lot of people pick something for a slew of reasons. It could be the graphics, the company, exclusives, or what features come with this one or that one. I ultimately choose a PS3 first for no other than Metal Gear Solid. Only to have a long wait for it to drop on the system.

In the end I ended up with a 360, and Wii to go along with the PS3. I ended up selling the Wii about a year after I got it, as it was nothing more than a dust collector. The 360 and PS3 found a lot of use though. I’ve seen some of my favorite series get better at least in my eyes lol. Along with new series such as, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Uncharted, among others. Which have brought new characters and worlds, in which can really make a person fall in love with. That after all is what makes gaming great as a form of entertainment.

The new gen consoles have been out for at least a year now. I figured it was time to pick one up. I again had to make that choice. Which one? It can be a hard thing to do, at least for me. My free time is getting smaller by the day, as I’m sure you all the follow me have seen in the past few months. And, I’m really sorry for that.

I was thinking about the PS4, and Xbox One, and my decision really goes to exclusives. That’s the whole point to me, I don’t care about how the console looks, or how big it is. Graphics isn’t a big concern to me, if it was I’d stick with PC for gaming. I don’t care about the social aspects, or media, because my PC does all that. I don’t really want something that does all that, because again I have a PC. I mainly want my console to play games, that’s about it, really if it was my choice that’s the only thing it’d do.

The reason I bought my PS3 was Metal Gear Solid and that alone. The 360 was because of Halo. Seeing as Metal Gear Solid V is going on everything, I ended up getting a Xbox One. Seeing as both are going to release later this year, I’ll have both, and want have to worry about having both consoles. Not saying I want end up with a PS4 at some point though, Sony has some great exclusives that are hard hitters.

As for making the switch to current gen, I think it was the right time and a good choice. Seeing as all kinds of great stuff has come out of E3 in the last couple of days. This year is already looking good.

As for the console, it came with The Master Chief Collection. Nothing really new to be said here, as its all old content. Still nice to have though, it will keep me busy with some of my die hard Halo friends. I also wanted to pick up another game, and it ended up being Shadow of Mordor. I was deciding between that, The Witcher 3, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. I’ve been wanting a good LoTR game, so Shadow of Mordor was the winner.

I’ve only got to put a few hours into it, but have thoroughly enjoyed what I’ve played so far.

As for anything else, its been really slow for me. The blog is lacking bad, and I hope to turn that around.

I’ve been trying to put most of my free time into fine tuning my skills with the animation. Slowly learning and grinding my way to getting better at things that need work bad. Its such a slow process that its a little painful at times.

  1. The last time I upgraded, I went from a PS2 to and XBox 360, followed by a Wii. My PS2 is still sitting next to the TV with the other two consoles. Since my PS2 was/is such a great console, I’m leaning toward buying a PS4 at the moment. It’s still going to be a while, though, since I haven’t even come close to completing my Gaming Backlog Goal.

When I bought my 360, it was mostly because I’d never owned an XBox, and I wanted to try it out. It’s been cool, but I can’t help thinking that I would have likes a PS3 just as good, or maybe even better. I’ve been watching the games that look interesting to me, and they all seem to be coming out for BOTH systems. A couple seem to be coming to Playstation FIRST, but that won’t matter by the time I get a current gen console.

Of course, I say BOTH systems, with the exclusion of Nintendo. Nintendo had always set itself apart from the other systems, and I think that’s been helpful for them. With the competition between Sony and Microsoft, both companies striving to be better than the other, Nintendo’s console’s are purchased for the great exclusives. Do I want Fallout 4 and the Final Fantasy 7 remake? Hell yea! And I also want to play the new Mario games!

I have a vision in my mind: I buy a new console with these upcoming games that are made for current gen only (no xbox 360 or ps3 versions, no way, wouldn’t even work), and I buy a bigger TV with the best picture and sounds available… buy a pizza… take a vacation. That would be a great reward for completing my backlog of games.

    • Lol that would be a good reward for finishing up the backlog. As for games on Xbox one and ps4 you want see much of a difference except for the major first party exclusive titles. And both companies have some great ones. Will admit though I do think Sony beats out Microsoft in the single player part giving people a good story.

The previous gen was an odd one for me. I had both a Wii and 360, and played mostly the Wii only touching the 360 a few times a year, until about halfway through the generation, when I pretty much reversed that. I still enjoy, and am glad I have, both of them, though.

I have to agree with you on just wanting a console for its gaming aspects. I don’t really get most of the integrated social media attraction a lot of game developers are pushing.

    • I really wanted to like my Wii, and ended up putting a lot of time into some games. But I guess the blood lust wasn’t there for me lol.

The social media in the consoles are a joke imo. I’ve never used any more f them so I’m not sure how good they are. Then again I’d like to see some data on how much they are used by people. The only thing I see people on is Netflix.

Is the Master Chief Collection working for you? I don’t have an Xbox One, and I think I read that they fixed that problems with that collection. Just curious as I love Halo but don’t have a Xbox One.

    • I know the game had issues, but I never looked into it to see exactly what they where.

So far I’ve completed 4 & 2, and half through 3 without any problems.

The multiplayer side I haven’t jumped into big yet, but have had my fair share of games.

The only big problem I’ve had was with Halo 3 multiplayer, keep running into extremely bad lag. But it was perfect on all the others including Halo CE lol.

Though again when I get into it real good things could change. But I have to admit being able to play Halo 2 online again feels pretty good.

In the previous generation, I got a PS3 about three years into its life in 2009. I’m glad I did because, initially, there were practically no games available for it. It ended up being a pretty economical purchase because I did not have a PlayStation beforehand, so I effectively got a PS, PS2, and PS3 in one fell swoop. Like you, Metal Gear Solid 4 is the reason I got a PlayStation 3. I played Twin Snakes on the GameCube and wanted to follow the story until the end. Somewhat ironically, after playing all of the games, Metal Gear Solid 3 ended up being my favorite game in the series. Indeed, it’s one of my all-time favorites now.

Personally, I think the PS4 seems the most appealing right now. I can’t think of any games on the Xbox One that I actually want whereas the PS4 is going to have a few that I’ll be interested in playing. Though it seems like most of the games I end up playing in any given console generation end up being cross-platform anyway.

    • It’s interesting to see how everyone has chosen their consoles over the years.

It hard for me to choose between MGS 3 or 4, as I feel both are top notch. Although I quite enjoy the duo that is Solid Snake and Otacon.

Most of the well known hard hitters will be cross-platform, at least for the moment. I can’t say enough how the PS4 would have been my first choice if MGS5 and Kingdom Hearts 3 were exclusive. Them not being, it makes the decision a lot easier. As I’ve been so engrossed in the Halo universe for years now.

Wii U / PC man myself. Splatoon woop. My brothers got an Xbox One but no Halo which is a crisis. Is the Master Chief collection any good? Might end up getting it for him *ahem*.

Post some animation when you get the chance man, would love to see it.

    • The Master Chief collection is worth every penny in my eyes for story alone. I’ve put huge amounts of time into each game and never get bored of them.

As for the animation I’m currently working on it. I’m still fine tuning and making things better. I feel once I get what I’m working on done it will make everything after easier, smoother, and faster to do. So hopefully it want take much longer. I’m excited to get it done and show it.

I was ambivalent towards either 360 or PS3, but I’m glad I chose PS3 on a whim, because, like you, that’s where I learned to love Metal Gear Solid (you can’t get the original on 360).

If you want to check it out, I just did a retrospective review of Ground Zeroes

my blog is lacking too at the moment lol, even e3 was kinda eh
