The story of Falling Rocks

Over the weekend, I had traveled up to Ohio. It was Easter weekend, my parents and brothers and one sister live there, while I live in Virginia.

On my way up going through Kentucky, I noticed at one point one sign (Watch for Falling Rocks). I’m sure most of us have seen it at some point.

The simple idea is traveling a rocky hillside, which is covered with rocks. At some point they could come loose and fall, potentially hitting a car and even hurting someone.

While I’m not sure how often those accidents happen. I have seen a few around here in Virginia. The main point of this is a story I heard when I was real young. Seeing all these brought that memory back. Read it yourself.

“Long ago there was young Indian girl who had fallen in love with a brave named Falling Rocks. The two were to wed, but Falling Rocks disappeared while on a hunting expedition into the mountains. He was never found. The poor Indian girl mourned her loss to the point of death, then finally passed on after a month of unending tears. The legend states that her ghost still roams the mountains here and will not rest until she finds her lost love. Hence the signs along the roads.”

Good right? Have you ever heard it before? Before I decided to post this, I looked it up online. I got a surprise because the story seems to be well known. But, with a multitude of variations.

Which all come as a surprise, I had only heard it from one person. Never has anyone else spoke of it before. That is what led me to post it. If you haven’t heard it, well here you go. If you have though let me know.
